This position is a technical position in the Transportation Systems Development department as part of the Technical Career Path. The technical career path is geared towards the individual contributor who wants to share responsibility for project success with team members. The main elements of this path include: 1) no direct reports, 2) heavy technical skills, 3) heavy teamwork, 4) heavy client/customer contact, 5) heavy daily planning and execution, 6) creativity. This position is part of the Transportation Systems Development team whose objective is to create and maintain information systems that support Union Pacific?s Operations. In addition this position will play a role in building safety and mission critical systems for the federally mandated Positive Train Control (PTC) program and maintain Production Level systems in a 24x7 environment. The ideal candidate for this position will have extensive hands on development experience with skills in Java, Spring, JDBS and JMS. In addition, this position requires a highly motivated, creative individual with strong technical and analytical skills who is able to design and deliver complex solutions. This position requires the ability to both partner with and mentor team members to meet program goals. Due to training and project requirements, it is anticipated that successful candidates will remain in current assignments with Transportation Systems Development for a minimum of 24 months before pursuing other internal opportunities.
Accountabilities
Use new information technologies to assemble systems meeting department standards that resolve customer department business needs. This may require an understanding or, and ability to work with, multiple types of hardware and software. This systems must be reviewed with customer department personnel to ensure it functions correctly.
Participate in system design/architecture planning for 99.999 mission critical environments
Participate in the maintenance and support of systems utilizing new information technologies to ensure performance, availability, protection and data security required for world-class transportation company. The existing system may utilize technology the incumbent is not experience in, requiring quick understanding of unfamiliar methods.
Work closely with customer departments to respond to questions concerning functioning of existing or proposed systems utilizing new information technologies. This requires a high degree of customer responsiveness while following project management guidelines in reporting time and effort.
Work with other project members to assist in meeting project goals. Provide assistance to team members in problems solving to correct system errors. Provide assistance to team members in meeting target dates and in understanding applications of new technologies.
Work closely with analysis staff to define, size and prioritize product deliverables for the development teams
Assist the project leader in developing and reporting project schedules to meet the department and customer requirements.
Provide 24x7 production systems support
Learn and master new technologies as needed
Qualifications
A Bachelor Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Management Information or related degree

years of solid Java hands on development experience
Systems or related field or a minimum of 6 years application development experience
Willingness to support 24x7 operations of mission critical systems
Solid problem solving and troubleshooting skills and ability to react quickly
Excellent communication skills and ability to build strong working relationships
Experience with large scale projects and cross functional teams across distributed systems
Experience in building high availability (99.999) and mission-critical architecture
Experience with various software development methodologies, including Agile and Waterfall
Candidates will be required to take (or have taken) and quality on the Berger Aptitude for Programming Test (BAPT-Adv).
A strong understanding of SOA architecture and programming principles, including schema design, JMS, JAXB2, OXM
Database/data engineering knowledge: Oracle, JDBC/Spring JDBC
Solid knowledge of Object Oriented development techniques
Testing background, including experience with JUnit/TestNG/DbUnit, Test Driven Development, FitNesse testing.
Continuous Integration experience with Hudson or similar tools
Version control experience with SVN or similar tools
Exposure to Web services development
Experience using RAC environment
